Avon Wildlife Trust covers most of Mendip and northern Somerset

Blagdon Lake Birds Wildlife Page ***** notable for Nigel Milbourne's splendid wildlife photographs (includes many insects) and ongoing comments on events and happenings around the lake. Nigel has walked the shores of this large, naturally-edged reservoir almost daily for 30 years or so and provides the most amazing resource for those interested in its wildlife and history.

Brickyard Farm Cottages Wedmore-based cottages close to the major bird reserves in Somerset; run by my daughter who has lived in the area for much of her life. Available for weekend or longer lets. Walk the Mendips and Levels from this base.

Butterfly Conservation, Somerset No longer confining its activities to lepidoptera, it takes a much wider interest in the insect world

Steven Falk collections ***** A superb source for insect identification, with first-class photographs, by one of Britain's finest entomologists. Steven is also a renowned artist, responsible for the artwork in 'British Hoverflies', by Stubbs & Falk. *****

Jim Gibbs Another local photographer spending much time on the moors and in the local reserves. Truly artistic, high quality photographs can be found on this site, produced by an excellent field naturalist who has lived in the area all his life.

'Royal Entomological Society ***** The society devoted to looking after the interests of professional and amateur entomologists. Publishers of keys to many insect families and orders and a natural source for insect information.

SERC (Somerset Environmental Record Centre) It is important to put any confirmed records into this centre.

SWT (Somerset Wildlife Trust) Covers all southern and part of northern Somerset, vice-counties 5 & 6.
